NHK BTS SONGS Interview (ENG)

[Q1. What is the most memorable event in the past 2 years?]

RM: I personally thought the stadium tour was the most memorable event. I’ve always thought performing on stage was a must-do thing but the situation right now makes me think that performing on stage was something special and was a special experience that I can feel only during that time.

V: We all feel the same. Because it was our first time on a stadium tour, we felt the need to do well and also felt nervous so we went through like 8 months of preparation of heart/mind.

JIN: Oh you’re very detailed.

JK: Yeah, we did prepare for a long time. For me, I really enjoy performing on stage. If I really had to choose (the most memorable event) it would be the preparation steps, such as the rehearsal, and also the first stage of the tour.

SUGA: I personally remember the stage in Chicago Soldier Field where it rained a lot (JK: It was also really cold). But the rain also seemed like part of the set and the equipments and the audiences were all in enthusiasm.

V: Performing in the rain was really enjoyable.

SUGA: Yeah I felt the joy.

JHOPE: I keep thinking of that moment.

V: After the concert, we had to ride the car and leave right away but at the same time the fireworks were really pretty so we continuously looked back.

JHOPE: The fireworks are the highlights of stadium tours. It’s a show that can only happen in stadiums.

JIMIN: It is very hard to see fireworks that are as splendor as those and when we look as those fireworks we always get the feeling that the concert is over. Watching the fireworks make us feel very sad but pretty at the same time.

JHOPE: Watching those make me think about all the concert halls we’ve been through step by step and it seems like the fireworks sum up everything. Also, watching the fireworks make us think about how hard we worked to come up to this stage.

JIN: To talk about another memorable event. In the beginning of this year, we went on a trip and I was really touched that the members went on a trip with me despite their busy schedules. We went to a rural area and picked strawberries and talked all night from 8 PM to 3 AM. We talked about sincere things.

RM: I wanted to talk more.

V: We listened to songs that JUNGKOOK and SUGA composed.

SUGA: Before my mixtape came out.

[Q2. How do you think about being called as the “21st Century The Beatles”?]

JIN: First of all, it’s a glory for us since they put us and the legendary singers together. But, we think we are just BTS. We are 7 members who like music and like to perform on stage.

JIMIN: It is a glory but we get to think that we should improve more to remain as 21st century BTS. On the other hand, I think it also prompts us to do better.

[Q3. How did you feel when you delivered the UN speech in front of all the big UN leaders?]

RM: I was really nervous but I just did it like how I perform on stage. Like how I grew up looking at amazing people’s works and lyrics, I would like people to just know that there are people like me and there is nothing impossible in this world.

[Q4. How did you spend your long break?]

JHOPE: Since we’ve done so many things and our entire life is based on making songs, dancing, performing on stage, when I was on our long break, I couldn’t rest peacefully. While resting, I felt like I had to do something.

V: I….really didn’t do anything. I really wanted to put everything down during the break so during the break I tried to think more positively to grow more as Kim TaeHyung instead of V of BTS.

(About ‘Black Swan’)

RM: ‘Black Swan’ is about when we couldn’t perform anymore and when we comes to a stage where we don’t like music anymore so sometimes we think that this may actually happen since every career is like that. If you started something as a hobby and that hobby becomes your work and business, it is natural that you start to not like it anymore. Despite those pains, the only thing that can bring us joy is music so while feeling the pain, because it also brings us joy, we step up again and repeat the cycle.

JHOPE: When I really want to do well but feel that my limit is reached, I sometimes do think that I don’t want to do this anymore. During those times, I really hate myself for thinking in such way and I try to overcome those thoughts.

JIMIN: We really enjoy singing and performing but when I think about the time later when that doesn’t become fun anymore and doesn’t come in touch, I feel really depressed and I really tried to express the depression.

[Q5. What was the first thing that came to mind when you’ve been told that the tour would be cancelled and postponed?]

JK: When we first heard the news it was devastating.

SUGA: We didn’t know when this would be postponed to so we went through a really hard time in the beginning.

JHOPE: For me, as time goes by it hits even harder that the tour is postponed.

[Q6. What do you do these days to keep up your motivations?]

V: I’m not particularly good at writing lyrics but these days I’m trying. Because we can’t perform on stage, I want to fill up this gap with something else for ARMYs so I try to compose more songs and include my feelings and thoughts in those songs.

SUGA: I am also doing a lot these days. When I have time I compose songs, also paint. I try to fill up the gap with creations. When I have a lot of time and songs come out well, I have to compose a lot during those times.

[Q7. How was the experience of doing such a big online concert for ARMY?]

JIMIN: We were really in need of performing and we are really thankful that we can perform through this online concert. I also talked with out leader while preparing that we are most like us when we are performing on stage.

JK: Although it was very nice, I still felt very sad that we couldn’t perform face to face. It’s different. I am also longing for the day where we can meet again.

[Q8. When did you feel ‘What a relief that we are 7, what a relief that we are BTS’?]

V: When we are on stage. Since we are 7 and because it is (specifically) these members I can withstand everything. If I were to do this alone, I would feel extremely lonely.

SUGA: When I’m on stage with them, I feel very reliable and secure. Because they are all very talented and good, I feel like they secure my side, front, and back.

V: It’s like they are securing my left arm, right arm, and my leg.

JIN: It feels like I’m another person.

[Q9. What do you want each other not to change? (Internal more than physical)]

RM: I wish they wouldn’t forget why we started this and what we are doing right now and also how we are repaying everything for ARMYs.

JK: Although it is impossible to say that we didn’t change in the past 7 years, I’m not worried that the members are going to change their intentions. I actually don’t want them to change physically.

JHOPE: Physically??

JK: Since we are getting older…

JHOPE: Oh so we should do more self care?

JK: Including me too!

[Q10. Tell us about BTS’s dream 10 years, 20 years later.]

JK: First of all..how old are we 10 years later…?

V: I am 36.

JIN: Oh I’m 40.

JHOPE: Because JIN is almost 30 now~

JIN: Wow I’m 50 years old 20 years later.

JK: I’m..34.

SUGA: Will we be able to physically perform on stage?

JIMIN: We can do everything.

JK: We will perform until we reach our limits.

SUGA: I want to achieve my dreams with our members 10, 20 years later.

V: 20, 30, 40 years later and until we die, I want to be with my members.

JIMIN: I’ve said before that 20 years later we should still live in our dormitory.

SUGA: Then JIMIN can be the leader.

RM/JIMIN: Okay!

JIN: Leader change

JIMIN: You guys should listen to the leader!

RM: This is more like boomer (Kkondae) than a leader.

JIMIN: My goal is to bring BTS up to the peak of the world. Trust me and follow me!
